Starting at 14, John Devlin evolved from local DJ to dance music legend, collaborating with icons and launching Subliminal.
John started out dj’ing at the tender age of 14 after being inspired from a DJ who played regular at his local under 18’s nightclub, from there he started to buy vinyl and build up a rather rare and classic collection of dance music.
During the early 90’s John became emerged in the Acid House scene that was sweeping the nation which led him to attend these huge dance events such as Eurodance, Streetrave, Fantazia Awesome 101, Rezerection week in week out to watch his favourite DJs from all around the world perform.
John’s first opportunity to put on his very own night was when he was 16 at a local community centre after doing 3 very successful nights his sights were set higher and his first ever club he was given the opportunity to play at was the infamous Fubar in Stirling.
The Fubar Club in the early 90’s was rated 1 of the best in the country and known for there all night party’s which won them numerous awards from magazines such as Mixmag, M8 & Muzik.
Radio show’s such as Pete Tong’s on Radio 1, Tom Wilson’s on Forth FM and Beat 106 would often shout out and support up & coming event’s at the club… So for this local lad to be given the chance to play this particular venue on a personal level was an achievement for him.
Not only did he get the chance to play in his home town but he became the house room resident and on a regular basis found himself rubbing shoulders with some of the industry’s leading figures such as Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, M-People, Mike Pickering & Graeme Park plus many many more who all played Guest’s at the club.
After securing a residency at the club John went on to appear all over Scotland playing in venue’s such as the Arches, Sub Club, Archaos, Tunnel to name but a few playing for some of the coolest club brands like Colours, Cream, Ministry, Streetrave, M8 & Clubscene the list goes on.
Aswell as his club appearances John featured as a guest on radio shows such as Clyde 1 FM ,Beat 106 and Joy FM.
As the years passed John felt he mastered his craft as a Dj haven gained experience within the scene to take him to the next level which was Running & Promoting his own Event’s Brand.
February 2003 saw the launch of his PhreakUnique brand at The Beat Club, Bridge of Allan, Stirling.. this intimate club setting became the scene for a monthly event which became a firm favourite amongst the local’s and fellow house heads from further afield.
6 year’s passed of putting on events and then Ibiza came calling, John had the opportunity to play out on the white isle for a few years’ so put club promoting on standby and flew out to play Mambo , Savannah, Eden, Es Paradis & Manumission..after his return from the balearic island he chose to step into Producing & Radio Production.
In May 2015 saw John launch his new club brand Subliminal at an unused underground club in Stlrling.. and after a few party’s he was lured back to where it all began his old stomping ground the Fubar where he secured guest artist’s such as Illyus & Barrientos , Allistair Whitehead, The Mambo Brothers, Lovely Laura & Ben Santiago, Seb Fontaine, Graeme Park, Brandon Block & Alex P, Jon Pleased Wimmin aswell as current favourite Hannah Laing.
John has a very open minded approach to his musical style however his sound ranges from Soulful/Funky/Deep House through to Progressive, Ambient Tech House.
DJ Influences came in the shape and form of Carl Cox, Frankie Knuckles, Eric Morrillo, Masters at Work, Danny Rampling, Pete Tong, and has shaped the DJ that John Devlin is today and if I wasn’t for them showing there music ability and style, and unique taste they all have who knows where it would have led.
However this DJ is still out there spinning and doing what he loves best and continues to support Subliminal as long as it may last.
